The Child Life / Child Development Program was established in 1968 in recognition of the unique needs of pediatric patients, especially the critically and chronically ill. The program was one of the first in the country and continues to be a model for other medical centers. A commitment to continuity of care and a highly developed volunteer program are two facets that distinguish the program from others.
Child Life/Child Development supports the entire family, helping children, adolescents, and their siblings acclimate to the healthcare environment. Child Life Specialists support children's development, using play and education to cope through life's stressful events.
The program includes a professional staff with Bachelors or Masters Degrees in specific areas such as Child Life, Child Development or Education. Most of the specialists are professionally certified and affiliated with the National Child Life Council.
For more information, please click here to be redirected to the Child Life/ Child Development Program's website.
The silent auction area at the event is one of our most important fundraising component. There will be many gift baskets up for bid. The auction usually opens as soon as participants come in and ends before the closing ceremony takes place.
Thank you for your support!
Please check back later for this year's silent action items.

It was the beginning of the year 2011, a fresh start with new goals and plenty of fun adventures, memories, and laughter. Though, something happened to me that would not only change my life for the next 10 months, but also leave an impact for the rest of my life. I am a sixteen-year-old girl, halfway through my junior year in high school, and was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a very rare cancer. I was completely blind sided by the diagnosis. It had seemed like my life couldn’t get any better, having that I just got my license, I was finally experiencing the freedom of a teenage life: living through the excitement of high school and having fun with friends and family. After various x-rays, MRI’s, and doctor appointments, it seemed like the pain could not be answered. While I was experiencing intense leg pain, I thought the worst it could be was a bone infection; cancer was not even existent in my mind. Finally, my doctor recommended getting a biopsy to take tests on a small part of my bone. The results came back within 48 hours, along with a flood of tears from my parents and me. This aggressive bone tumor has attacked part of my kneecap along with my whole femur bone. I had no idea how extreme my life would change until the next day when the doctor explained everything. I’d be going through various tests at the hospital, chemotherapy treatment for almost 10 months, along with a large surgery. No more going to school? How did this happen so fast, I was caught so off guard. Unfortunately, the treatment needed to start fast as the pain was increasing at a fast pace. Now I live my life day-by-day, grateful for every second of it. I know there are ups and downs in life and we learn from every bit of it. Now I ask all of you to please join Team Allie. You will not only be helping me get through this rough journey, but also the many other kids who are finding their way through this same experience. Will you run for me?

Hi my name is Amber and I am 18 years old and had a liver transplant when I was 15. My transplant was very unexpected since I was a very healthy kid. Going through this transplant has inspired me to want to become a liver transplant coordinator and I want to work here at UCLA. I got sick and a month later I was here having my transplant and me and my family were shown a miracle. I was only on the list for my liver for about 8 hours and everything went so well I was out of the ICU in 2 days. My doctors and nurses are my heroes for saving my life and I am truly blessed for everything this hospital has done for me.

Hi my name is Andrew Palpa and I am 6 years old. I was born with a lot of heart problems. I have been in and out of the hospital since I was 3 days old. Even though I have had to go through a lot in this little amount of time I am very thankful that my heart was able to be fixed. The one thing that I have to look forward to in every hospital visit is the playroom. Any time the doors are open I'm there! Everybody is always sooooo nice to me. The times that I'm not able to go to the playroom they will bring me things to my room. I love to play with the Nintendo systems! The playroom makes my trips to the hospital better. Thank you for running for me!

Angel has spent many YEARS in his short life in the hospital. As a young Child, Angel did not have family with him and developed anxiety and many fears of the hospital and procedures. He has had more than 30 surgeries in his life and more minor procedures than could be counted.
Angel, like many of the kids at UCLA, has a love for superheroes. You would see him riding the hallways of the hospital with his superhero cape, light saber, Jedi robe or costume. At the hospital he is not a sick patient, he is a playful little boy and Child Life helps make sure that is possible.
The Child Life Department allows Angel to be a little boy first. They advocate for him to have a say in how things are done when possible.
They help him understand what procedures he's going to have and ease his fears of the unknown. They arrange play time for him even when he is wheelchair bound or unable to get out of bed. They distract him during difficult or painful procedures such as dressing changes or removing stitches. Most of all.... Child Life at UCLA brings a smile to Angel's face and gives him HOPE each day of a sometimes very difficult hospital stay. Will you run for me?
Hello, My Name is Austin and I am 20 months old. I was born with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia. This disease begins very soon after birth and affects 1 in approximately 15,000 infants. I have been in and out of the hospital my entire life and have grown accustom to hospital living. On Jan 21 2011 I received my life saving piece of liver from my uncle Ronnie. I have stayed 40 plus days in Mattel Children’s hospital post transplant. The things that help me get through my extended stay at the hospital is the Awesome Child life program that brings me toys, comes to visit me and takes me on wagon rides to the playroom. The Nurses and Doctors are Amazing and always help me through the tough times in my life. I enjoy playing with my cars and watching all the toy story movies. I am very strong willed and a fighter. Please make a donation on my behalf and come out and walk / run for me. This will not only benefit me but also all the other children in the hospital in the future. Will you run for me?
Hi, my name is Casey and I'm 8 years old. I have a chronic, degenerative disease that affects my stomach and intestine. I also have to get some of my nutrition through an I.V. at night. When I'm at home, I love to play Basketball and I also love to go Bowling.
When I get sick, I come to Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA. The Child Life specialists make my stay at the hospital pretty awesome. I like going to the playroom to play games and do arts and crafts. Sometimes if I'm feeling bad and I can't come to the playroom, they let me have a basketball hoop IN MY ROOM! They take care of me like no other hospital has. I am very happy at UCLA. Will you run for me?
Christian Pappas is a 13-year old boy from Laguna Niguel, CA who is currently battling a rare form of bone cancer. He is a club soccer player who scored 22 goals one season and a great athlete who runs a 5:53 mile. He is a straight “A” honors student who is missing all of his eighth grade year. He is currently undergoing proton radiation and then will continue with his 40 weeks of chemotherapy. While he has lost all of his hair in this process, he has NOT lost his great smile, charming personality, and fun sense of humor. Will you run for me?
Hi my name is Elyse (but I liked to be called Ely). I am 4 ½ years old. I was born with a condition called Chronic Intestinal Pseudo Obstruction it’s a rare condition that basically means that for no apparent reason my intestines will not function properly or sometimes not at all. At this point time there is no known cause or cure for my condition but I hope that there someday will. In the meantime my life is sustained with TPN (Total Parental Nutrition) every day I get hooked up to an IV so that I can receive everything that my body needs for that day. Although I don’t eat very much there is two things that I love to eat the most and it the Beef Tacos and Ice chips that they serve at that hospital. Since I was born I have been admitted to the hospital at least once every month for various reasons and my stays can be anywhere from a week to a month. I have had multiple surgeries in the past 4 years that most of the surgical team now knows my name without even having to look at my chart. I love all the Nurses and Doctors here at UCLA they always do their best to make me feel better. Even though I sometimes have a lot of pain I try to stay happy, and do the things that I like to do: like play hide and go seek in the hallways or do arts and crafts and play board games. Child Life helps me do those things by bringing me lots of supplies, toys and games, but the thing that I love most of is my Child Life specialist Rebecca she always goes out of her way to make me happy weather it is playing with me in my room when I can’t make it to the playroom or just sitting with me to talk when I don’t feel well enough to play she always makes me feel special and helps me forget that I’m sick and always treat me like a normal kid no matter what condition I am in. Child Life is one of the things that I can look forward to when I have to stay at the hospital I hope that you run for me?
Our family was devastated when our 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with cancer in July of 2010. We had been blindsided by this diagnosis, finding a pediatric neurosurgeon, and ultimately a pediatric oncologist specializing in her type of cancer. We were guided to Mattel Children's Hospital/UCLA where we were put in the good hands of the doctors and nurses there. What we didn't expect was the support of the Child Life program. We were introduced to Hilary Gan on our first day at UCLA and Hilary hasn't left our side yet. Hilary was with me as I told our daughter that she had cancer. She was there to help explain the operation to insert her port-o-cath and g-tube. Hilary had a doll with a port and g-tube to show Grace what would be happening to her body. Most of all, she was there to tell Grace that she was going to lose her hair. That was the hardest task and Hilary did such an amazing job that Grace was able to move on without complaint. Grace suffered many setbacks and was hospitalized often. Hilary was there for every hospital admission with games, arts and crafts, toys and just her time spent with Grace. When Grace was well enough to start getting chemo in the outpatient clinic, Hilary still included her in hospital activities when something fun was planned whether it was to just play in the playroom or attend a party. No milestone has been overlooked by Child Life in Grace's life ... birthdays, losing teeth, finishing radiation, learning how to tie a shoelace. All were celebrated with great fanfare and attention.
We put our daughters life in the hands of the doctors at UCLA. What we got as a bonus, was the safety net called Child Life. Child Life has supported us through the worst events in our family's life. We will be forever grateful. Will you run for me?
Hi my name is Kamila. I am a six year old, fun, energetic, first grader. I am a small bowel and liver transplant recipient. I love to eat Flaming Hot Cheetos and pizza. My favorite color for now is red. At home I like to play Wii, board games, dress up and read with my mom and dad. When I'm at the hospital I like to do arts and crafts and play board games with Child Life, and their volunteers. I am thankful that they are there for kids like me. I want to say thank you to Sarah and Child Life. Will you run for me?
Kourtney is 8 years old and has spent all of her life in and out of the hospital. The day before her 8th Birthday she was given the gift of life. She received a small bowel, large bowel and pancreas Transplant. She has been in the hospital for 8 months due to complications and is waiting for a second Transplant. Kourtney loves Peter pan and swinging on swings and her dog Mikey. She loves art dancing and Disney. Kourt is the youngest of 4 children. Kourt is active in her care and can tell you all about her Transplant. Kourtney has a spirit like no other and she is funny, sassy, and wise beyond her years. Kourtney is one of a kind and waiting for those perfect one of a kind organs. Will you run for me?
Hi my name is Michael and I am 7 yrs old. I was born with multiple congenital heart disease and porto-pulmonary hypertension. I have been in the pediatric ICU (intensive care unit) for the past 7 1/2 months. My mom describes me as always happy and having tons of energy! My Child Life Specialist Anna says “he’s a hands on little scientist who loves to work on experiments and create crazy mixes. He has an active imagination and despite the ups and downs of being in the hospital he has managed to keep himself cheerful.” I just like to play play play!! Will you run for me?
