This is my 6 year old son Pedro. Pedro likes to be called Peter, but he says Pedro is fine too! Pedro has two younger brothers, Ivan who is 5 years old and Angel who is 3 years old. He’s
such a responsible and funny kid! Pedro was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) one month after his 5th birthday on January 22, 2018. It was a lot for Pedro and
our family to go through. The first Child Life Specialist we met, Katie, was there to help Pedro understand what was going on with his body. Pedro loves super heroes and Katie explained that Pedro was a super hero that was using medicine called chemo to fight the bad cells that were in his body. Child Life always was there to help us understand what was happening. Pedro gets most of his chemo outpatient in the Peds Infusion Center so he gets to stay home. Pedro did have to stay in the hospital a few times last year due to neutropenic fevers. One of our longest stays was 20 days and without Child Life Pedro’s stay would have been horrible. Thanks to Tracy and Laila, the Child Life Specialists in the hospital, Pedro was having so much fun making slime, coloring and doing different activities. They even helped us out with contacting different organizations to come visit Pedro, drop off some fun things to do, and decorate his room in all kinds of super heroes! Thanks to Child Life our stay wasn’t boring and Pedro didn’t have a difficult time being in the hospital even when he didn’t feel good. Right now Pedro is now in Maintenance so that means he doesn’t have to get chemo every week (or even multiple times a week) like the first 6 or 7 months. Whenever he gets poked for his port a cath or for any kinds of medical procedures he can get a little nervous. Millicent, our Child Life Specialist in outpatient clinic, helps Pedro feel comfortable and she always asks Pedro what
she and the nurses can do to make his visit as easy as possible. She also helps us print out calendars to take home. This helps Pedro understand when he has to come back to the clinic so there are no surprises and he knows what to expect. The best part is he gets to decorate his calendar with his favorite stickers! Without the Child Life Program our journey would have been 10x more difficult.
