Tuesday Night Players
Genisee was diagnosed with cancer about a month before her 9th birthday. She is known for being so smart and kind to others. Genisee has always been a special girl, mature beyond her years, but we never in our worst nightmare expected a challenge like this, especially so early in her life. I remember the day Genisee was diagnosed with leukemia like it was yesterday. As I heard the doctors telling me the news, everything became so foggy. I remember trying to keep myself
together for my daughter and trying to process the million details that I was being told. I spent the first night in the hospital with Genisee and the Child Life Specialist was right by my side. She held my hand as I cried and she calmly answered all of my questions. She was like an angel helping us through our darkest days. Ever since that day, a Child Life Specialist at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital has been there
for our family, every step of the way. Our Child Life Specialists provided comfort, toys, games, laughter, conversation, and friendship for Genisee whenever she needed it. I cannot imagine going through such a difficult challenge without a Child Life Specialist there to help us. Genisee is now in the Maintenance Phase of chemotherapy and she’s enjoying every minute of the new freedom she’s received. Genisee loves to swim with her swim team, read Harry Potter books, and hang out with friends! Genisee is well on her way to full recovery and we’ll be forever thankful to our Child Life Specialists!
