My Name is Andrew and I am 8 months old. I was born with a Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation Type 1K. For the first few months of my life, I was shuffled in and out of multiple hospitals that were not able to determine my diagnosis or the cause of my illness. I was brought to Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA in October 2012. After spending most of my life in and out of doctors’ offices and hospitals, UCLA was able to determine the cause of my illness and put a name to my rare disorder.
From the start, Chase Child Life has been a huge part of my life and recovery. They have helped make my life close to normal, and even brought me a wagon to help me get out of the crib that I'm so constantly confined to. After my first surgery, Chase Child Life eagerly came to my bedside and brought me a crib mobile that lights up and plays music. This was a big deal for me since I'm a music lover and often times I find comfort in music on the days that my disease gets the best of me. Jack Johnson is one of my favorite artists. When I would go on a wagon ride, the doctors and nurses could hear the music coming down the hall, and knew that I was coming.
During a hospital stay, I was greeted daily by a Chase Child Life volunteer —they have truly become a joy in my life and that of my family. They are able to make a hospital room feel close to home, and are an outlet for my parents on a bad day. My disease often brings difficult times, and knowing that Chase Child Life is always available for support has made each day a little easier for everyone involved.
Please help me and other children battling difficult times to find courage and strength. Donating or participating in this incredible event can help amazing children beat incredible odds.
I hope you will run for me!
